WITHOUT FEAR OF VERTIGO (article first published : 2006-04-10)

The Flatfoot Dance Company in conjunction with the Drama and Performance Studies Programme (UKZN - Durban) will present Without Fear of Vertigo from April 20 to 22. Featuring the FLATFOOT Training Company, the production is written and choreographed by Lliane Loots and workshopped with the dancers.

The dance work poses the questions: What if Icarus was a woman? What if Icarus came from the Southern tip of Africa … and what if she suffered from vertigo?

Without Fear of Vertigo dives into the re-writing and re-creation of myth that speaks of contemporary issues for a contemporary South Africa. The sexual violence of rape, racism and the politics of naming, Diasporic identity and a remembrance of women’s treatment in detention cells in apartheid South Africa all form the backdrop to a re-telling of the story of Icarus – a woman who sought freedom in her desire to fly close to the sun. Ultimately it is a story of beauty and courage told through text, singing and contemporary dance in a style for which the award-winning Flatfoot is famous.

Choreographer Lliane Loots takes the 28 young trainee dancers through an explosion of intercultural dance that seamlessly tells the story of all who have ever desired to define themselves and not be victims. And what better site specific performance space than a roof top – closer to the sun and with the feeling of leaving all that holds us down?

Without Fear of Vertigo takes place on The Roof of the Drama Practical Block from April 20 to 22 at 19h00. Tickets R10 (available at the door on the night of performance). Queries and bookings to Clare Craighead on 082 875 6065.

(NB: The Drama Practical Block is situated in the Drama Department: UKZN, Durban Campus. Follow the direction signs leading off from the Square Space Theatre)
