BOLLYWOOD LOVE STORY (article first published : 2008-08-23)

Shared Histories – The Indian Experience – offers a festival of music, theatre, dance, art, film and food in South Africa and takes in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town from August 21 to October 5.

TW Production the producers of the festival are back in SA this year, having had a successful festival in 2007, to present Bollywood Love Story – A musical. The dynamic production encompasses the passion and cheesy plot devices of a classic Bollywood film coming together with high energy choreography, stunning popular songs and even has a political edge. The production has won rave reviews and has been playing to capacity audiences and standing ovations across Europe.

“Roll sound, Camera, Lights, Action!” The Bollywood genre has captured the imagination of the world. Three hours of unforgettable colour, dance and song usually revolving around a theme of unrequited love has won over hearts and minds from the icy climes of Alaska to the wilderness of New Zealand.

Bollywood Love Story - A Musical borrows liberally from the greatest musical hits of the decade, taking audiences on a journey that includes foot tapping music and great stunt action. The cast is truly Pan Indian hailing from Delhi, Mumbai, Shillong, Chennai, Lucknow, Bikaner, kanpur, etc. The music is live and combines the traditional Khaimaicha, Moorchang, Khurtal with guitar, drum, bass and keyboards.

Produced by Sharupa Dutta, directed by Sanjoy Roy and choreographed by Gilles Chuyen, the show promises to enchant audiences with dazzling costumes and vibrant dace amidst a narrative that can only be told Bollywood style. Director Sanjoy K Roy says that after having received rave reviews in Germany for the show, which was translated into German, he is certain that South African audiences will find the curtain raiser to the six week long festival a sure feast.

Bollywood Love Story - A Musical runs at the Playhouse from August 27 to 31 at 19h30 with a performance on August 29 at 11h00 and on August 30 and 31 at 14h00.
