TELKOM TRAINS WEAVERS (article first published : 2000-06-2)

Recently, Telkom discovered that women weavers, especially from KZN and Gauteng, were often the unwitting users of stolen copper wire for use in the weaving of curios. In a unique empowerment drive which may also help reduce theft of copper wire, Telkom enlisted the help of artistic women weaver. They are now being supplied with free copper wire off-cuts and other surplus and taught how to improve their weaving expertise standards. Telkom also help them market their improved products both at home and abroad.

The Telkom Foundation had decided to not only supply the women with copper wire, but also to improve their expertise by training them in the art of weaving complex geometric patterns.
