THE MTN ART AND CRAFT TRAIL (article first published : 2000-04-17)

Margate has much to offer over the Easter holidays. Go in your own vehicle or catch the MTN Festival Bus and enjoy a free three-hour round trip of selected festival exhibitions that form part of the meandering Margate Southern Explorer Art and Craft Trail. The bus departs daily from opposite the Shelly Centre at approximately 09h00 and 13h00. More details from MTN Festival Hotline on 083 222 5151.

Bus Stop Browse No 1 takes in a weaving and pottery exhibition at Die Spinwiel which features artists Graham & Riette Carter’s extensive range of stoneware wall plates and bowls as well as hand woven mohair and wool carpets. Then it’s on to an exhibition of paintings and portraits by Diane Erasmus. This well-known local artist has created a new collection of work for the festival inspired by her recent trip to the Cape where her work is now exhibited at three of the top Cape galleries. In addition to her collection of landscapes, seascapes, still-life and flowers Diane creates 40-minute portrait sketches from life at the reasonable fee of R125.

Bus Stop Browse No 2 takes in Lameck Shange’s fascinating stone and wood carving exhibition in the age old tradition of Raeek and Black serpentine stone carving and Bus Stop Browse No 3 moves on to a photographic exhibition at the Skylight Gallery in the Mud Hut Centre where the adventurous can be dressed and photographed in period costume. Photographer Keith Erasmus also undertakes conventional black and white and sepia portraiture. No sitting fee.

Bus Stop Browse No 4 visits the Margate Art Museum which invites guests to a cultural adventure created by local Art By the Sea artists while Bus Stop Browse No 5 moves on to Ramsgate’s Waffle House and an art exhibition at the Gaze Gallery of works by some of South Africa’s top artists and potters.
