UMCEBO AT USHAKA (article first published : 2007-07-30)

The Umcebo Trust has moved to Shop B9 at the Ushaka Walk Shopping Complex. “This is my dream come true,” says Bongani Gumede, Workshop Manager.

The idea has been to take the Umcebo Model and to translate that into an integrated retail and workshop shopping experience. Shoppers can purchase high-end designer craft and talk to the very people who made it or watch them at work. The Trust specialises in small ranges and designer one-off commissions. Only the best materials are used and the Trust continuously works with crafters on ongoing product and design development.

“We are going to also stock the work of other projects which we think is exciting and fresh,” says Robin Opperman, Director of the Trust. “This will allow us to become a craft emporium of sorts, and assist others to market their work in an environment, which protects them and their intellectual properties.

“We cannot thank Ushaka enough for their support and encouragement, in particular Bongani Xaba, Greg Jacobson, Malcolm Carlyle and Annamarie Geldenhuys. Also a special thanks to Kelvin Glen and CJ Horn. A special thanks as well to Jenny and Terry Toms MacDonald, who helped us to move. Thanks as well to Sheer Design Training for helping us get the word out about our move, with ongoing releases and site updates. We have arrived at this point thanks to the endless support and encouragement of the many supporters who have made us who we are, and we cannot thank them enough for this.

“The Ushaka retail environment allows us to market the work as it really should be, and to allow crafters not only to get crafting but also acquire retail skills and direct feedback from the public at large on their work. This has set us on a new and exciting path, and we cannot help but be excited about the endless possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead. We hope that you can visit us, and share in our excitement.”

Umcebo Trust trading hours are Monday to Sunday (09h00 to 18h00). More information from Robin Opperman on 083 793 3408, fax 086 6937831 or email: robin@umcebotrust.co.za
