COSMO MAFOTI (article first published : 2007-01-10)

Cosmo Mafoti is a wire artist from Zimbabwe whose artistic talent has been seen in the variety of small items he makes - insects, Christmas decorations and household "knick knacks" and many more.

His talent was recognised by Engela Bloch a member of the Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens. Herself extremely talented, she came to the committee of the Friends with a suggestion that Cosmo Mafoti be approached to create life sized wire wild animals.

Towards the end of last year, Cosmo excelled himself by creating the Big Five - fully beaded animals in a display titled Ola African Safari.

Apart from the larger animals all set in a bushveld theme, there are numerous smaller animals to be discovered crawling up the branches or sitting in the trees.

Sponsor Ola Ice cream and the Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens have joined forces to create an amazing experience that will be of interest to all members of the family.

Cosmo Mafoti and his teamís fascinating works of art can be seen in the Specimen House in the Durban Botanic Gardens until the end of February. The display is open from 09h00 until 16h30 every day until the end of February 2007. Entrance is free.

More information from the Gardens Info Centre on 031 309 1170.
