THUPELO WORKSHOP (article first published : 2006-11-14)

The 2006 Thupelo workshop will take place at Rorkes Drift from November 11 to 25.

Many of the artists who graduated from Rorkes Drift have been involved in Thupelo. Due to the concern they expressed about the centre, Thupelo decided to work with Tami Jali and Christiane Voith, Centre manager at ELC Art & Craft Centre, and bring artists from various backgrounds to work together for a two week period.

This is an unusual experience as most artists work alone and have little time to develop and discuss their work. This time allows them to interaction with new people, exchange ideas, experiences, materials, skills and information. They will all do a presentation about the art in their home country, enrich their working experience and return to their communities with new information, stories and friendships. This workshop will include six artists from Rorkes Drift and others from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cape Town, Umlazi, Durban, Venda, UK, USA, Nigeria, Pakistan, Lesotho, Tanzania and Eritrea.

Among the artists selected from 51 international applications are Gordon Mbatha, Isaiah Buthelezi, Joel Sibisi, Lindumusa Mabaso, Mbongeni Buthelezi, Vusi Zwane, M-afrika Mtiya, Gabi Nkosi, William Zulu and Witty Nonhlanhla Nyide.

The artists will have their first meeting on November 11 where Jill Trappler will introduce the workshop and Tami Jali will coordinate the following two weeks. There will be an open day on November 25.
