WALFORD HERITAGE WEEK (article first published : 2006-09-23)

Acclaimed Shongweni potter Andrew Walford will open his home and studio for Heritage Week from September 24 to 29 from 10h00 to 16h00.

Andrew Walford has been working in the Japanese tradition for the last 40 years. He has gleaned information from Bernard Leach in England in the 1960’s, from design studios in Sweden and Germany in the 70’s. He had the privilege of staying in Mashiko for several weeks and observing one of Japan’s National Living Treasures, Shoji Hamada working and firing his kiln.

Sheltered by massive cliffs, Andrew Walford’s house and studio are perched on the edge of the Shongweni Dam Nature and Game Reserve where it is commonplace to see both black and fish eagles as well as hornbills and many other birds in a completely unspoilt forest environment. The trees and natural forms inspire Andrew with his brushwork which he does with ease using brushes imported from Japan and handmade by himself. He will also be throwing on the wheel and be available to talk about his craft.

Andrew does not have time to talk at leisure on the major exhibitions he holds three times a year, such is their popularity, so take a drive, imbibe the magic scenery and pause to appreciate the life of a true craftsman.

Alongside Andrew’s pottery there will be an exhibition of Russell Walford’s exquisite furniture, Martin Taylor’s nguni hides and lanterns as well as Isithebe handcrafted mats by Mrs Zuma who also stays in Shongweni.

To find Andrew Walford’s studio, take the Shongweni exit off the N3 and travel eight kms in the direction Shongweni Station to B9 or phone 031 7691363. More information at www.andrewwalford.co.za
