CLAY FESTIVAL ’06 (article first published : 2006-09-2)

Clay Festival ’06 will be staged by the Gauteng Region of Ceramics Southern Africa (formerly the Association of Potters of SA) at the new FADA Building of the University of Johannesburg from September 23 to 25. Interested ceramic artists are invited to participate in this event which is the biggest of its kind on the South African ceramic calendar.

The official opening takes place on September 23 at 17h30. This will include the opening of the Gauteng Regional Exhibition which incorporates the work of the workshop presenters and students of the UJ Ceramic Dept in the Gallery of the FADA building. The exhibition closes on October 2.

Many suppliers will be represented with the latest information on clays, glazes, kilns and books. Interesting ceramic videos/DVD’s will be shown throughout the three day period.

A connoisseur’s master class on throwing and lectures/slide shows by Janet DeBoos, internationally renowned ceramist from Canberra in Australia, will be the highlight of the event. She will also be the Award Judge at the Ceramics SA National Exhibition opening at the Nico Theatre, Cape Town, on October 8 and running through to October 22.

Inspirational workshops and lectures/slide shows will also be given by well-known ceramists and cognoscenti.

From Gauteng, Willem Basson will lecture on sculpture; Prof Alex Duffey will give a lecture on the Van Tilburg Collection housed at the University of Pretoria, Clarissa Hathorn’s lectures discuss “Is it absurd to be a potter in the 21st Century?” and “North, South, East, West which ideology suits you best?” while Michelle Legg demonstrated coiling, burnishing & sprigging.

Western Cape artists represented are Andile Dyalvane who will present hand-building and decorating workshops and Christo Giles who will focus on throwing.

KZN’s Clive Sithole will be handbuilding and decorating in tandem with Andile Dyalvane and will present a smoke firing.

Well-known South African sculptor Anton Smit takes part in a clay bricks sculpture workshop, Gerhard Swart offers an open discussion on Ceramic Design and Minette Zaaiman decorates in tandem with Christo Giles.

In addition, there will be silver clay demonstrations by well-known ceramist Hilmar Eichhoff and there will be a fun ‘loose cannon’ ongoing handbuilding exercise during the three days of Clay Festival where anyone can participate in the handbuilding exercise and view the interesting result at the end of the event.

Entrance fee R15 (children under 12 free). A booklet on Hints & Tips compiled by Gail de Klerk and condensed into one handy reference book will be on sale at Clay Festival. Light lunches, teas and refreshments will be available on the premises.

For visitors from out of town - recommended accommodation at excellent B & B’s on request.
