BUZZART (article first published : 2006-06-2)

It may seem extremely early to be planning for a Christmas Exhibition in March, but the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts is doing just that.

The KZNSA is a progressive contemporary arts organisation dedicated to the promotion of visual arts in KZN.

“Our architect-designed building houses galleries, a craft shop and a restaurant, and is situated in park-like surroundings,” says the press material.

“Annually the shop and gallery collaborate to produce a huge festive exhibition which takes place from the end of November until the beginning of January. The space is divided into areas of general gifts, and specialist areas which showcase the best local art and craft that the organisers can source.”

The KZNSA Christmas Exhibition has gained a reputation over the years for offering a huge and diverse mix of festive season wares, from the innovative and original to the quirky and the stylish, combining handmade items and factory made goods into an eclectic and affordable mix.

The turnover is exceptionally high and in recent years exhibitors have included suppliers such as Monkeybiz, Hands (delicate bead and wire jewellery and bags), Brett Murray, Hillcrest Aids Centre, Trayci Tompkins Studio ceramics, Linda Hojem ceramics, jewellery from the jewellery design graduates of Durban Institute of Technology and Mano of Muzeum.

The organisers are looking for new work for consideration for the exhibition. The emphasis is on quality, good craftsmanship, style originality and saleability.
