CEASER MKHIZE & THAFA DLAMINI (article first published : 2006-04-29)

The next exhibition at The African Art Centre will feature beaded sculptures by Ceaser Mkhize and Thafa Dlamini. Five of their standing angels were chosen to decorate the judges’ chambers at the New Constitutional Court in Johannesburg.

Largely self-taught artists, Ceaser and Thafa collaborate on the sculptures both deciding on the forms. Ceaser usually makes these, using wire frame which is then covered with black cloth and padded with cotton wool. After discussion on design and colour, the form is then beaded by both artists.

The sculptures are usually large in size, being half a metre high on average. The subject matter includes animals, insects and birds - some of them combined with mythical creatures. Ceasar maintains that he is trying to make a third world where art reveals another dimension and wants to have their work accepted by others as living entities.

From 1994 to 1997, Ceaser attended Velobala Group Fine Art classes run by the African Art Centre. The following year he took part in the doll-making workshop run by The African Art Centre held at the Durban Art Gallery, where he was inspired to use beads to decorate his sculptures. His work has appeared on a number of local and international exhibitions.

Jenny Stretton, Curator of exhibitions at The Durban Art Gallery will officially open the exhibition at 17h30 on May 17. It will run until June 3. The African Art Centre is situated in Tourist Junction.
