CREATIVE GLASS (article first published : 2005-12-16)

In Creative Glass, Dorothy Wood brings clear glass to life with added colour, wire, beads and mosaic. Fifteen step-by-step projects are featured including decanters, jugs, vases, bowls, wire glasses and candlesticks.

Basic tools such as pliers and wire cutters are used. Using simple techniques, Dorothy Wood’s designs are suitable for both beginners and experienced crafters alike. The book is perfect for those who want to create affordable, individual gifts for family and friends.

Creative Glass is an 80-page soft cover book featuring an introduction by the author. Materials, equipment and the basic techniques used are also explained.

The characteristics that make up wire are defined as the type of metal used and its thickness. The type of metal gives the wire its pliability and colour. Wire thickness is measured in millimeters or by the Standard Wire Gauge System (SWG). The higher the SWG, the thinner the wire.

With bead and wire-wrapped coloured vases, we are shown how sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. All that was needed to decorate these pretty, coloured vases was delicate twisted wire combined with flower-shaped metal beads. With the Christmas baubles, the thickness of the wire chosen would depend on the size of the bauble and whether a chunky or delicate look is needed. The simple mosaic mirror is an ideal project for the novice mosaicist.

As it is published in soft cover, I think there could be a problem using Creative Glass extensively. On opening it for the first time, the spine gave way a little. It is also difficult to keep the book open flat, which would make it frustrating to refer constantly to the instructions.

Published by New Holland Publishers and retailing at R99.95, Creative Glass is also available in Afrikaans as Kreatiewe Glas ISBN 1868727505 – Pauline Dalais
