BRIGHT SPARKS (article first published : 2005-11-14)

An innovative, original, quirky, affordable selection of stunning festive season gifts will be available under one roof at the KZNSA Gallery in Bulwer Road, Durban, as part of their innovative Buzzart Bright Sparks exhibition.

“Over the past couple of years the KZNSA Gallery has expanded and grown the annual Christmas Exhibition into a lively and active centre during the festive season. Known as the place for festive season shopping that has ‘something for everyone’, we also realize that we face stronger competition from large retailers than ever before,” says KZNSA Curator, Storm van Rensburg.

Taking up the challenge, the KZNSA has taken the idea of Christmas shopping and placed it into an art gallery context in order to offer something quite different from other retailers. The KZNSA has identified a dozen outstanding artists and crafters who have been ‘commissioned’ to produce a range of goods for the exhibition. They have targeted ceramicists, jewellers, woodworkers, wireworker, potters, mosaic-artists, bead workers and crafters.

“Our selection is based on the extraordinary and exceptional,” says Storm.

The exhibition will consist of two sections. The Main Gallery will house the usual large and diverse mix of festive season wares, whilst the upstairs section (Mezzanine and Park Gallery) will house the Shining Stars exhibition.

The Main Gallery will cater for every taste, need or pocket – from tree decorations to handbags; from candlesticks to sandals; from jewellery to clocks; from picture frames to keyrings. This is complimented by the Shining Stars exhibition of artworks and collectables – all carefully commissioned to become this season’s most coveted gifts curated as a mini-exhibition with extra attention given to the display of goods, to benefit the integrity of the product.

The Buzzart Bright Sparks exhibition runs at the KZNSA Gallery in Bulwer Road, Glenwood, from November 20, 2005, until January 8, 2006. More information on 031 202 3686.
