PLEDGE FOR WORLD AIDS DAY (article first published : 2005-10-17)

Every person in South Africa is affected in some way by HIV and AIDS. The public is invited to make a pledge to take action this World AIDS Day, December 1, and show the world that South Africa is ‘a nation caring together.’ This is this year’s theme of Khomanani, government’s HIV, AIDS, TB and STI communication campaign.

“Make a pledge to care for orphans and other vulnerable children, to talk, to get tested or to practise safe sex, and turn this pledge into real action by caring for children affected by HIV and AIDS, talking about HIV and AIDS to your children, colleagues, family or community, knowing your HIV status by getting tested and practising safe sex,” says Claire Taylor, Khomanani media relations consultant. “As a nation, we can turn the tide of HIV and extend help to those directly affected – but only if we “care together for life”.”

High profile members of the entertainment industry have already made their pledges including actress, director and comedienne Krijay Govender: “For Khomanani Day, I pledge to speak to girl children about issues around HIV, AIDS and sexuality.” Comedian Marc Lottering pledges to “encourage all Capetonians to protect themselves and to survive, I will do this by handing out condoms.’

To make a pledge online: go to www.aidsinfo.co.za for email pledging. Otherwise phone 086 222 2709, sms the word "Khomanani" followed by your pledge to 34709 or fax your pledge to 0866 117 425.
