KEEPITUP (article first published : 2005-09-26)

A unique way of ensuring that bottles and glasses are kept upright at picnics, concerts and other outdoor events where drinks are consumed, has been launched in Cape Town. The innovators proclaim: “It's time to say goodbye to the inconvenience of spilt drinks and toppled bottles that go hand-in-hand with outdoor beverage consumption!”

The Keepitup concept was conceived on the lawns of the outdoor concert setting in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town while musicians enthralled fans with fine music as they relaxed on rolling, sloping lawns having a picnic and sipping their drinks. Having seen too many glasses and bottles tipping, the creator of this handy invention and a regular visitor to Cape Town, Malcolm Maidwell, decided that there was a definite need to put an end to this inconvenience.

"I could see a need for a device to keep bottles, be they wine, soft drinks or water, as well as glasses or flasks upright,” he says. “I decided that Keepitup should not only meet a need but that it should also be exclusively wired and decorated in the Cape and create employment for previously unemployed and physically challenged people of Cape Town. At present, we have six craft workers in Khayelitsha and ten physically challenged individuals at the Ocean View Work Group producing these eye-catching creations."

Keepitup sets for two bottles and four glasses at R129 including VAT and postage in South Africa are available now available from Wil Rohm on tel/fax 021 557-1517 for orders originating in South Africa. Alternatively, orders can be placed via keepitup@telkomsa.net or rose@rosehare.co.za
