SHONGWENI CRAFT (article first published : 1999-12-4)

Why not head for Shongweni on Sunday (December 5) to the Open Days of potter Andrew Walford and stained glass artist Guido van Besouw?

Start off with Andrew at Shongweni Pottery, take exit 32 off the N3 and follow signs in direction of Shongweni Station for 8 kms till you reach B9. If you get lost, phone 769-1363, but the volume of cars in the road usually gives a good indication that you’ve reached the right place!

A well-known and internationally-acclaimed potter, Andrew Walford made successful trips to Tokyo and Europe at the beginning of the year and is planning an exhibition in Cambridge, England, in May 2000. His studio has breathtaking views over the Shongweni Dam and Nature Reserve and his Open Days offer a full range of gift ideas from 10h00 to 18h00. After you’ve made your purchases (and there are always good buys on the bargain table), and if you’re there around lunchtime, take time off to enjoy their famed breyani as well as some home-made mince pies.

After Andrew, head for Guido van Besouw’s studio. Go back to where you exited from the N3 and carry on towards the Assagay Hotel (formerly The Polo Pony) and signs will be posted from there. The address is 202 Keyridge Road, Assagay. Phone 768 1154 if you get lost.

Guido van Besouw is one of the few artists still around who works in the time-consuming and highly costly traditional stained glass method. Many churches in South Africa, and St James’s in Venice Road is one of them, have stained glass windows created by Guido. At his Open Day from 10h00 to 17h00, you can see him working at his new, and much larger, furnace. Glassware, including his beautiful and classic new range of perfume bottles, will be on sale.
