TIMOTHY MLAMBO (article first published : 2005-07-19)

Timothy Mlambo is The African Art Centre Artist of the Year 2004/2005. The African Art Centre will host an exhibition of his work from July 20 at 17h30.

This 41 year-old talented sculptor lives in a remote area of Mangusi, KwaZulu Natal. He carves his sculptures out of a local species of Milkwood called umPengende in Zulu.

The forms are painted in a detailed decorative pattern to suit the piece. The content of the sculptures are animals, insects, birds sitting in trees, or flowers. Sometimes they have a whimsical humour, with some creatures sitting on others or even strangling them!

The African Art Centre Award supports an artist for the period of one year with a monthly stipend to enable the artist to have the time and money to concentrate on his or her craft or art. Candidates are chosen by The Development Committee of the African Art Centre for their mature age and maturity as an artist/craftsperson as well as their capacity and consistent production over a number of years. Also taken into account is visibility, innovation, vision and a historic contribution to art or craft. Also the artists’ capacity for passing on their skills and knowledge to their community.

Timothy began carving wood while working as a cane-cutter in Gingingdlovu, KZN. He was encouraged by Peter Engblom to make sculpture … and the rest is history.

The exhibition runs until August 6. The African Art Centre is situated in Tourist Junction, Pine Street. More information on 031 304 7915.
