WOMEN’S ARTS FESTIVAL (article first published : 2005-07-17)

The Playhouse Company's annual South African Women's Arts Festival takes place in Durban from August 5 to 7.

This year's attractions include a strong Gospel-singing component, with superstar Rebecca Malope contracted to appear in a main-stage gala concert in the Playhouse Opera on August 7 at 15h30. Scheduled to appear alongside her are Deborah Fraser and the popular group Avante.

Other attractions of the three-day festival include an arts and crafts exhibition opening in the Playhouse's elegant Alhambra Room on August 5 at 18h00; a conference in the Playhouse Drama theatre on August 6 at 11h00, followed the same day in the same venue by performances of a newly commissioned dance piece by the Phenduka Dance Theatre, which will be given at 14h30 and 19h30, and August 7 at 14h30.

A drama programme featuring K.E.Mang, a highly-praised new play from Gauteng, will be presented in the Playhouse Loft on August 5 at 19h00 and again on August 6 at 15h00 and 19h00.

The Playhouse's Grand Foyer will serve as an attractive venue on August 6 at 21h30 for Late Nite Jazz which in recent years has become a popular attraction.

"Now in its ninth year, Playhouse's Women's Arts Festival holds a benchmark position on our national arts calendar. It is conceived as a stage for airing the phenomenal creative work of women. The works presented have pushed boundaries, creating awareness of women's strengths, vulnerabilities, passions, fears and dignity," says Linda Bukhosini, Artistic Director of the Playhouse Company.

"This cultural event continues to highlight the ongoing benefits of empowerment, promotion, an affirmation of women as leading role players in today's world, especially those who hold their heads high and walk forthrightly despite the many challenges life has dealt them. It is a tribute to all women who have dared to speak out, speak back and through this change their lives."

Booking is through Computicket or the Playhouse's Dial-a-Seat on 031 369 9555. For further information, contact the Playhouse Company's Marketing department on 031 369 9456 or email marketing@playhousecompany.com
