ART AND CRAFT AT UPBEAT (article first published : 2005-05-15)

Crafters and arts-makers are warmly invited to exhibit their wares at the second Upbeat: Kearsney Festival of Music to be held in the in the gracious college grounds from May 27 to 29.

Kearsney College is hosting a winter weekend music festival of eclectic music for the enjoyment of patrons. To add to the ambience of the festival, as well as the musical line-up, the organisers are looking to create a sophisticated arts, craft and unusual-wares market for music lovers to enjoy in-between shows.

This year there is special emphasis on the visual arts side of the festival. There will be works of art and craft by well-known local artists and potters such as Martin Wenkidu and Andrew Walford.

On May 28 from 09h30 until 12h30, Johannesburg-based registered art therapist and bio danza (movement and dance) teacher, Gillian Vellet, will present a workshop offering a different slant to creativity. Working with movement and clay, Gillian will help participants discover their inner creativity through music. The workshop, which takes place in the arts studio, does not depend on previous experience or ability. To book, contact Carol Tullidge on 031 765 1247 or e-mail: misti@kearsney.com

On May 27 from 18h00, an exhibition by the Ceramic Southern Africa (KwaZulu Region) will be held in the visual arts block, the theme of which is Movement, Rhythm and Jazz. A number of clay artists, fibre artists and crafters such as Carol Hayward-Fell and Martha Zettler will show their works. (see separate article)

Stall-holders of appropriate arts, crafts and unusual flea-market wares are being sought. Trading areas are 4 square metres and stall-holders should provide their own gazebo, tables and infrastructure. A nominal amount will be charged which goes towards the festival.

Organisers are looking forward to a fun weekend. As well as music and a craft market, there will be a visual art display, various food outlets and plenty of fortifying liquid refreshment accompanied by mellow music, lots of buskers and music. The idea is to embrace winter – so on offer will be lots of “warm” music; open braziers; hot-chocolate, gluwein and marshmallows.

Interested crafters can contact Lorraine Hartley on 083 335 3293. A full programme is obtainable from Computicket outlets, or visit www.kearsney.com or www.computicket.com

Booking is at Computicket or 011 340 8000 or 083 915 8000. More information on 082 882 9869.
