TRIBUTE TO JACKY FLETCHER (article first published : 2004-11-28)

The following is a tribute from potter Caroline Smithyman to well-known quilter and marbeliser, Jacky Fletcher who died on November 3. Formerly based in Durban where she was instrumental in launching the Berea Meander, Caroline Smithyman now lives in England.

I first knew Jacky Fletcher, the outstanding Quilter and magical Marbeliser when she joined the Berea Meander in January, 199l. Jacky's artistic skills and incredible work were known throughout Natal, Capetown and the rest of South Africa where she would demonstrate the technique and art of marbelisng to thousands of people. Her cheerful countenance, warm laugh and caring ways embraced everyone. Her contribution to the Berea Meander was immense.

Jacky was a very close friend. To enumerate her wonderful qualities in a few words is difficult. A telephone conversation with Jacky left you with a feeling of happiness. Always laughing, joking and fun to be with. My husband and I have spent many happy hours with Jacky and her husband, Robert.

Jacky went into hospital for a small operation on the 2nd November and was due out on the following day. Sadly that was not to be and she died on the morning of the 3rd November.

I would like pay tribute to Robert, Jacky's most devoted and wonderful husband, who strongly supported and helped Jacky with her work. Jacky and Rob had been together for over 43 years and had produced two sons, one daughter and many grandchildren. They were a devoted and loving family.

A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday 9th November in Durban's Botanical Gardens where Jacky was closely associated. Caroline Smithyman, Chester, England.
