KTV MARKET DAY 2004 (article first published : 2004-09-12)

Young people between the ages of 6 to 16 across South Africa will once again get the chance to celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship on October 9 of this year when K-TV hosts its annual Market Day in seven centres around the country.

Experience with this very successful project has proven that children love the opportunity to showcase their individual talents in different categories. Hosting this successful annual event for the ninth year, K-TV Head Helen Smit, says, “The ingenuity and inventiveness of these young entrepreneurs are really inspiring.”

Each year the different venues host scores of proud parents and bargain hunters who spend the day marveling at the creativity of the kids. The overall winner of KTV Market Day 2003 was 12 year-old Abby Houghton from Kimberly. Abby’s business was called Kablam and featured ‘Beaded Accessories’ such as necklaces and beaded bra-straps.

Abby’s hard work paid off and she won a bursary from the Allenby/Damelin education group to the value of R30,000. The bursary will be kept for her until she’s old enough to put it to good use.

From Kimberly to Bloemfontein to the ever-growing East London, youngsters travelled for kilometres to participate in the fun and sell their wares. KTV looks forward to an even more successful event with even bigger ideas this year.
