UMCEBO BANNER PROJECT (article first published : 2004-01-20)

The word “Umcebo”, is a Zulu word meaning “Treasure". The special learners of Ningizimu School have produced a treasure chest of banners. Each combines a variety of skills (beadwork, wire work and sewing) as well as a combination of bought and recycled materials (ranging from tin cans to crystals).

"We opted for single concept banners, which had a very strong message, but which also told of the joy of everyday life which the pupils manage to experience, despite them often coming from very economically disadvantaged backgrounds and experiencing all the disadvantages of their mental and sometimes physical challenges," says Robin Opperman Director- Umcebo Trust and Workshop Environment.

The banners embrace the themes of The Sun; Moon and Stars; Drum; Flower; Dibuka; God; Ancestral Beliefs; Durban: Dream; Freedom; Aids and Sharp Sharp!! If you have not had a look as yet, go and see it before it closes, and leaves for Port Elizabeth.
