SILVER AND HORN JEWELLERY (article first published : 2003-10-16)

The African Art Centre’s director Anthea Martin is to open an exhibition at the AAC on Octoer 15 of silver and horn jewellery by Bongi Tshabalala and Vusimusi Langa.

Bongi Tshabala is a second year student currently studying BTech Jewellery Design and Manufacture. He was inspired to use cow horn after seeing traditional Zulu snuff containers and combines this medium with silver to make earrings, pendants and rings.

Vusimusi Langa is a self taught artist who makes sculptures in wood and Jewellery out of polished cowhorn. He attended a bone and horn carving workshop held at Durban Institute of Technology in June 1998. This inspired him to work further with horn which is a material that is readily available.

The exhibition opens at the African Art Centre on October 15 and runs in conjunction with the exhibition by the Zimeleni Embroidery Project.

More details from AAC director Anthea Martin on tel/fax 031 304 7915.
