DECOUPAGE CONVENTION (article first published : 1999-09-29)

Durban Chapter of National Guild of Decoupers (Decoupage Artists worldwide) will host their National Convention in October with public open days from October 22 to 24 at the Dutch Reformed Church Hall in Montclair Road, Montclair. There will be an entrance fee of R5.

Over the last decade, arts and crafts enthusiasts worldwide have become enchanted with decoupage, an 18th century art form that reflects the elegant living of a bygone era. Decoupage is the art of decorating objects with cut-out pictures and building a “smooth as glass” finish over the pictures. Pronounced “day-coo-pajhe”, it is derived from the French word “decouper” to “cut out” or “cut up”.

Modern applications of the art form trace their origins to the 18th century in Italy from which point it spread to England and Europe. In the 19th century, fashionable ladies on the continent were using embossed and die-cut designs as ornaments for boxes, screens, panels and furniture. Today’s enthusiasts use a wide variety of artwork, some honouring “traditional” art and others moving towards a more contemporary style. Decoupage can decorate anything – from the smallest box to the most massive piece of furniture.
