SASOL WAX ART COMPETITION (article first published : 2003-05-3)

The first Sasol Wax Art Competition, held in 2002, was greeted with overwhelming enthusiasm by artists, the general public and the media.

The competition explores any applications of wax in the art-making process and is one of the major focuses of the Sasolburg WAM! Festival. Approximately 2500 people came to view the exhibition last year over the 2,5 days it was open to the public. Prizes total R120,000 in cash!

Due to its unprecedented success in 2002, the organisers have expanded the scope of the sasol wax in art competition 2003 to accommodate entries from other parts of the country.

Regional selections will take place in June in KZN, the Western Cape and Gauteng.

Selected works will then be sent by Stuttafords Van Lines to Sasolburg and exhibited at the WAM! Festival in Sasolburg from 29th August- 1st September 2003. The winners will be announced at an award function on August 29 at the Flavius Maerka FET College.

This competition is also unique in that it does not focus only on young artists by placing an age limit on those who may enter. Any artist over the age of 21 may enter. (In the case of students, they have to be in their final year of study and meet the age requirements.)

The exhibition is sponsored by Sasol, one of the largest producers of wax world-wide. All entry details are available at www.wamfestival.co.za or email taryncohn@metroweb.co.za
