STEP-BY-STEP FABRIC PAINTING (article first published : 2003-05-3)

Step-by-Step Fabric Painting by Tharina Odendaal and Anika Pretorius is a soft cover follow up to the authorsí previous successful book Painting on Fabric.

Tharina Odendaal is an experienced artist and qualified teacher. Both of these qualifications are very much in evidence as the projects are explained in a step by step process with good artistic flair.

As with their first book Anika Pretorius was responsible for the text presentation. She has also had a book published by Struik, Gifts from the Home.

The book is tastefully and colourfully presented, giving the readers the inspiration required for embarking on their own projects. Many of the pages have text superimposed on photographs of fabric. This is particularly the case in the chapter devoted to the most suitable fabrics for painting, offering the reader a clear idea of the type of fabric being discussed.

There are over 20 projects in the book, each explained in detail in a logical step-by-step manner with colourful photographs illustrating the finished article. There are also photographs to illustrate the various stages in completing some of the projects. Before each project is started there is a description of the tools required to complete it.

Although the primary focus of the book is to guide the novice through projects there are challenging projects for the more adventurous or experienced artist. I particularly liked the patterns that are included at the back as these could be used by the novice to gain confidence and by the experienced to give inspiration for their own designs.

Techniques discussed in the book include various painting techniques, stencilling and silk screen printing. The use of colour and heat treatments to fix the design onto the fabric are explained in easy-to-follow terms.

The book, published by Struik, is set to retail at R119.95 and should be a welcome addition to the craft enthusiastís library. It is also available in Afrikaans - Lapverfwerk - Vera Castleman.
