NINGIZIMU BANNER (article first published : 2003-03-9)

Learners of the art department at the Ninizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped are now becoming renowned for their fascinating and exotic beaded banners which grace the Elizabeth Sneddon stage at events such as Poetry Africa.

The hard-working and creative youngsters under the guidance of their art teacher Robin Opperman have just completed the banner for the Time of the Writer Festival to be held at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from March 10 to 15 at the University of Natal Durban.

The banner is 3m X 2m and is a combination of bought and recycled materials

“We have encouraged the community to bring their ice cream containers etc for us to cut up and combine with the bought materials,” says Robin Opperman. “This gives them a sense of ownership over the school, our projects and the finished products. The pupils have been paid for their work, and we have had a chance to buy and work with very good quality materials.”
