CREATING A TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS (article first published : 2002-11-25)

Creating a Traditional Christmas is a 64-page soft cover book containing a range of ideas to help make the season more festive.

The projects have been written by a team of contributors, each expert in their various fields with a strong media profile and a proven track record in producing successful and popular books with broad appeal.

The first thing I noticed whilst paging through the book was that the contributors used the same designs and photographs for certain floral designs as featured in Jenny Raworth’s Creating Flower Displays (see review in Craft pages).

Creating a Traditional Christmas is lovely, the layout crisp and clear and the photography is excellent.

The cookery section was clear and the useful tips that were given were helpful. The recipes chosen were just what is needed for the festive season, without getting too involved. There is a delightfully luxurious Christmas cake with iced singing Santas carrying sacks and there is a section for warm drinks like Hot Buttered Rum. Not exactly the kind of thing you’d drink in Durban in the humid heat of our festive season but no doubt highly desirable for those who have cold and snowy Christmases!

All the sections are very informative, basic and easy to follow. A charming section deals with handmade cards. Very welcome, as I think there is nothing better than receiving a card from someone who has taken time out to create a special item to suit the person to whom it has been given.

Suitable for both beginners or experienced cooks and crafters alike, this is a delightful book which I am sure would be welcomed by friends who enjoy entertaining.
