CERTIFICATE FOR NINGIZIMU (article first published : 2002-08-26)

The art department of the Ningizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped recently created an almost two metre high Statue of Liberty out of fabric and beads and stuff with scrap plastic in keeping with Ningizimu’s emphasis on recycling.

Former US Consul to Durban, Craig Kuehl, bought the state from Ningizimu and sent it over to the Head of Special Schools in Manhattan New York as Ningizimu wanted the work to demonstrate its feelings of sorrow and solidarity at the loss of life on September 11.

“We are also hoping to establish links between our pupils and the pupils of the City of New York via an e-mail relationship, with possible future collaborations still to come,” says Robin Opperman, head of Ningizimu’s Art and Technology department.

Ningizimu has since received a Certificate of Excellence for outstanding creative visual art from District 75 – Citywide Special Education Programs in New York.
