CURTAIN MAKING (article first published : 2001-11-2)

Heather Luke's latest book Heather Luke's Complete Curtain Making Course not only includes excellent pictures of curtain styles and instructions for making them, but also features details for designing and making a wide range of window dressings including tiebacks, pelmets and basic blinds.

Instructions are clear and Heather covers ideas on how to choose colours and textures and how to measure windows and work out the required amount of material required as well as how to get started.

The book is beautifully illustrated and pictures depict the new trend in curtain fashion. It will be a worthwhile asset for anyone who would like to learn how to make their own curtains and for those who intend redecorating or moving house in the near future.

However, the new fashion of extending curtains so that they spill onto the floor is not really cost effective considering the extra fabric needed. Also its not entirely suitable for the hotter parts of South Africa since a static pile of fabric is liable to prove highly attractive as a good place to make a home for our abundant insect life and industrious ghekkos! This style, however, provides good draught protection and would be suitable for the cooler parts of South Africa, around the Berg area for instance. Of course, instructions could be adapted and still give a charming or elegant effect, depending which design was required.

With an international reputation as an interior designer, Heather Luke is a highly creative author with a proven record of successful soft furnishing books. She lives in Taunton in Somerset in the UK where she runs the Calluna School of Soft Furnishings.

Heather Luke's Complete Curtain Making Course book is published by New Holland Publishing (SA) (Pty) Limited and retails at R139.95 and is also available in Afrikaans as Heather Luke se Volledige Boek oor Gordynmakery. Audrey Coetzee
