CAKE ICING MADE EASY (article first published : 2001-06-3)

Carol Deacons's book Party Cakes for Children contains not only easy to follow directions to create cute and clever decorative icing for party cakes, some of which are "works of art", but also a diverse variety of recipes given both in metric and the old "pounds and ounces" for those of us still thinking in those terms!

Also included are recipes for microwave baking. The clarity and detail of the colourful illustrations will assist beginners to copy ideas with ease. This book is great value for money and will be an asset to all busy mums with young children wanting fresh ideas for cakes for those special days.

Living in Datchet, Berkshire, in the UK, Carol Deacon is an experienced cake decorator and demonstrator who began her career in 1992. In 1993 she was the winner of an icing contest sponsored by a leading food magazine and was later appointed cake consultant to an international chain store.

She writes regularly for various food magazines including Cake Craft and Decoration and demonstrates regularly on television. She is the author of the highly successful Quick and Easy Novelty Cakes and No-Time Party Cakes - both published by New Holland Publishers (UK) Ltd.

Priced at R99,95 and also produced by New Holland, Party Cakes for Children is a soft cover publication of 96 pages. It aims to prove that even the most modest housewife can create a work of art for children. Her subjects include Football Team, Baby Dinosaur, Horrible Bug, Fishing Pond, Sleeping Teddy, Jungle Explorer and Wicked Witch, to name a few.

The editor is Kate Latham, with design by Paul Cooper and Kevin Kilbey. There are over 120 specially commissioned full-colour photographs by Edward Allwright. The publication is also available in Afrikaans as Carol Deacon se Partytjiekoeke vir Kinders.
