ZAKHELE HAND CREATIONS (article first published : 2001-02-24)

Under the auspices of The Port Shepstone Training Trust, rural women are trained in basic needlecraft and fabric painting skills in order that they can earn a living.

Also taught is the skill of recycling shredded paper from which the trainees are able to produce greetings cards, calendars, photo frames etc. Production and marketing of items comes under the banner of Zakhele Hand Creations

The operation has outgrown the premises from where they have been working in the centre of Port Shepstone. Suitable premises to relocate the operation were not apparent in Port Shepstone and a heaven-sent opportunity arose late last year when, what was formerly a pre-primary school, situated in Izotsha became available.

The new venue is situated some 10ks from Port Shepstone and 4ks from Shelly beach, alongside the scenic tourist railway line on which the Banana Express operates from Port Shepstone to Paddock. This means that passengers are able to disembark on their trip to purchase items produced by the trainees. Parking is also available for tourist buses to call on their way to visit Oribi Gorge and further inland. Of vital importance is the necessary space for training and production and for drying items in the sunshine

The administration of the project is conducted from what was originally the station master's house, again something novel for the tourist and the sign at Izotsha siding reads "Port Shepstone 7 Miles” (not kilometres). This all adds character to the setting and with the added exposure to the market the concern hopes to go from strength to strength.
