BRONZE CASTING WORKSHOPS (article first published : 2001-02-2)

Well-known Durban artists Kim Goodwin and Sarah Richards are to run a combined bronze casting workshop which will take place in Durban and in the Natal Midlands.

“The idea is to give people a chance to experience making a bronze first hand and to bring awareness to the process by demystifying it, making both sculpture and bronze casting more accessible,” says Sarah. “Both artists and non-artists are welcome – they will need to bring a wax sculpture to the workshop or a mould so that Kim can pour a suitable wax ready for casting. Participants will have at least three sculptures by the end of the workshop – a large and a small bronze as well as a cuttlefish cast sculpture.”

The workshop starts on March 6 from 18h00 to 20h00 at the Art and Sculpture Studio, 20 Chestnut Road, Glenwood and will continue over the next two Saturdays – March 10 and 17 – at the Goodwin Foundry in the Natal Midlands.

The cost of the workshop is R740 and a deposit of R300 is required by February 20. Beginners who may need extra tuition can join a sculpture class at an additional cost of R55 per class where Sarah can assist them in all processes required for the casting workshop.

More information from Sarah on 083 707-0126.
