JEREMY’S ANGEL (article first published : 2000-10-24)

In August this year, 29-year old Jeremy Sutton of Ilala Weavers in Hluhluwe was shot dead as he and assistant Zakele Thwala were collecting craft from a group of women near Ntshongwe.

The mission of the Sutton family, which runs the internationally renowned Ilala Weavers, is to empower rural Zulu people through craft making.

In Jeremy’s memory, Ilala Weavers are promoting “Jeremy’s Angel”, a beaded Christmas tree ornament symbolising his work with KZN crafters. To date several major Durban hotel outlets and local companies have place orders for the angel to use in their festive season decorations.

The angels at R15 each carry a card telling the story of Jeremy Sutton who designed them. They can be ordered from Ilala Weavers, PO Box 195 Hluhluwe, 3960. Write to Angel’s Against Crime enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope and a cheque made out to the company.

Visit the website on angelsagainstcrime.co.za or phone (035) 562-0630/1 and fax (035) 562-0361.
