IZIKHWEPHA ZETHU II - OUR STRENGTH (article first published : 2000-07-30)

An exhibition titled Izikhwepha Zethu II - Our Strength running from August 5 to September 15 at the Durban Art Gallery showcases the crafts made by participants of the DAG’s outreach programme conducted by Phumzile Dlamini. This aims to teach craft skills to individuals and organisations in order to generate income and provide a creative form of expression.

Loosely translated, “Izikhwepha Zethu” means one has power or strength. This exhibition was first held in 1999 and included works by weavers, potters, sculptors, fashion and textile designers, bead makers, embroiderers and painters. Outreach workshops have been held in the urban and rural areas of Durban for the last five years where teaching methods encourage people to develop their own styles using a variety of materials.

Exhibitors attend regular classes in areas such as Clermont, Chatsworth, Wentworth, Umlazi, and Mariannhill as well as the Nazareth Women's¹s organisation to name a few. The classes are based mainly on practical craft skills such as beadwork, fabric decoration, stained glass paintings etc.

The programme makes the participants aware of the wealth of art and craft in the region especially that collected by the DAG. By presenting the exhibitors’ works in this prestigious venue, offers them an excellent opportunity of displaying their talents to a wider public. Another objective is to increase awareness of the programme so that the DAG can offer similar workshops in other areas.
