FNB CRAFT WINNERS (article first published : 2000-07-23)

The winners of the FNB Vita Craft Now Millennium Awards were announced at the opening of the annual exhibition at the African Window Museum in Pretoria. The exhibition will remain on show until August 25.

The Gold Award of R10,000 went to the Mapula Mother of Rain Embroidery Project started in 1991 by Soroptimists International in Pretoria to create and develop the skills of women in the Winterveldt area. Managed by Emily Maluleka and Rossina Maepa, the project provides an income for almost 70 women. The winners, who all received a portion of the prize money are Sherley Menyuku, Selina Makwana, Engelinah Maseko, Rossina Maepa, Mevis Dibakwana, Brenda Mahlanga, Stella Mnisi and Christina Mabasa.

The Silver Award was presented to Thys Carstens from Cape Town, a 60 year-old pharmacist whose hobby is bowl turning. He demonstrates regularly at national seminars and workshops with various woods inlaid into resin. The winner of the Bronze Award is Michelle Legg who teaches at the Witwatersrand Technikon ceramics department and is currently doing research for her Masters on the design and construction of hand-built ceramic products and artefacts.

Other awards of R1,000 each were presented to Peter Mthombeni; Beverley Price; The Mdukushani Project in Durban; Clive Sithole; Caesar Mkhize; Alson Zuma and Flora Ngobeni. A Special Award of R500 for Zulu dolls was presented to Lobilile Ximba and Tholiwe Sithole, both from KZN.
